ARSENALE DI VENEZIA
The Venetian Arsenal (Italian: Arsenale di Venezia) is a complex of former shipyards and armories clustered together in the city of Venice in northern Italy. Owned by the state, the Arsenal was responsible for the bulk of the Venetian republic's naval power from the late Middle Ages to the early modern period. It was one of the earliest large-scale industrial enterprises in history". Suggested visit for your Venice trip."

ARSENALE DI VENEZIA
The Arsenale di Venezia, or Arsenal of Venice, is a complex of former shipyards at the north-east end of Venice in the Castello District. Owned by the state, the Arsenal was responsible for the bulk of the Venetian republic's naval power from the late Middle Ages to the early modern period. Construction of the Arsenal began around 1104, during Venice's republican era. It became the largest industrial complex in Europe before the Industrial Revolution, spanning an area of about 45 hectares (110 acres), or about fifteen percent of Venice.Originally established as a naval depot for private ships, in 1320 the Arsenal was renovated through funds provided by the Templar Order. Official ownership by this point transferred to the Venetian government, and with the Arsenal's expansion, it became the largest industrial complex of the city. The state came to rely on it as the production center for its navy and large merchant vessels. At its peak, the Arsenal was able to churn out an entire ship in just a day. By 1450, over 3,000 Venetian merchant ships were in operation, both as supply ships for Venetian merchants and as warships for the Venetian navy. This naval power resulted in the domination of Mediterranean commerce. Venice's leading families, largely merchants and noblemen, were responsible for creating some of the grandest palaces and employing some of the most famous artists ever known. Nevertheless, as the benefactors of the renovation project, control of the Arsenal ultimately fell to the secret Templar Order, and from 1320 until 1486, it became their base of operations in Venice. The Arsenal's main gate, the Porta Magna, was built around 1460 and was one of the first works of Venetian Renaissance architecture. It was based on the Roman Arch of the Sergii, a triumphal arch in Pula in Istra, now in Croatia but then Venetian territory. It was perhaps built by Antonio Gambello from a design by Jacopo Bellini. Two lions taken from Greece situated beside it were added in 1687. One of the lions, known as the Piraeus Lion, has runic defacements carved in it by invading Scandinavian mercenaries during the 11th century. Historically, the Arsenal was mentioned by Dante Alighieri in his Inferno, part of the epic Divine Comedy. There, he compares the boiling pitch in which Grafters are immersed in Hell to the material used to caulk the seams of ships in the Arsenal, which Dante had probably visited during his stay in Venice. In 1593, Galileo became a consultant to the Arsenal, advising military engineers and instrument makers and helping to solve shipbuilders' problems, many of them relating to matters of ballistics. He was also responsible for creating some major innovations in the production and logistics of the Arsenal.
