Camp Darby

Ho frequentato Camp Darby per Servizio molte volte in molti anni …L’Ho visto cambiare e trasformarsi ……É stata una tappa importante prima del grande salto che mi ha riportato ad essere un Civile..Conservo forti legami di amicizia con molte persone che ci hanno passato il tempo insieme a me....Che si sono poi sparsi per il Mondo...Che hanno assunto posizioni importanti in sia in campo militare che civile...Che sono tornate negli Stati Uniti...Posto sulla Livornese tra Pisa, Livorno, e l'aeroporto militare Camp Darby 1000 ettari di suolo italiano ceduto in uso agli Stati Uniti nel 1951...Deve il nome al Generale Darby..Comandante dei Rangers morto durante la seconda guerra mondiale .......Dal 2021 la porzione che gli Statunitensi..poco più di 30 ettari...avevano dedicato alla ricreazione..Ospita il COMFOSE..Vi porto tutti per sempre nel CuoreGrazieSono legato da molti ricordi tristi o allegri e piacevoliVi porto tutti comunque nel Cuore

Camp Darby is a great place to explore greater Tuscany for US Military personal traveling abroad. There is a small Army Lodge on post with typical rooms. Nothing really fancy, but for a service member on a budget that doesn’t speak Italian, this could be a welcome affair. There is also a commissary and PX, while small, they have almost everything an individual needs. The Commissary has a wonderful deli with great sandwiches and hot food. The cities of Pisa and Livorno are close by. You will need a rental car to get around as public transportation is not very reliable. The base is slowly closing down, and it much smaller than in the 1980’s. It is definitely more convenient to stay in Pisa or Livorno rather than Camp Darby if you are traveling for only touristic reasons, but if someone has a family, this might be a good alternative.

The Darby Military Community, previously known as Camp Darby, is a United States military complex in Italy in the Tuscan region situated between the cities of Pisa and Livorno. It is under Italian military control and can be managed anytime by Italian authorities. The Northern part of the base has been transferred to the Italian Army, which transferred its Special Forces Command to Darby on 10 June 2020.The base was formally dedicated on 15 November 1952 as Camp Darby, and is named in memory of Brigadier General William O. Darby, Assistant Division Commander of the 10th Mountain Division, who was killed by enemy artillery on 30 April 1945 on the shore of Lake Garda, Italy.

Génial, à visiter en famille

I was there with my wife 40 years ago, after a strenuous trip through Italy. Staying in the quiet cabins in the small forest at the far end of the base was a welcome respite from the busy and loud hotels.
