Sacrario Militare di Monterosi

Ettore RossoVolunteered for war on 8th September 1943.He received the orders to lay a minefield in a position North of Rome.While they were doing this, they received news that a column of German soldiers was approaching and so he ordered that the trucks loaded with mines be used to block the road.Upon arrival the German commander gave him 15 minutes to clear the road, Ettore used this time to complete the barrier and order his men to retreat apart from four volunteers.When the Germans started to advance the Italians opened fire but realising that this was ineffective, they blew up the trucks killing both themselves and the head of the German column including the commander forcing a retreat.Pietro ColomboGino ObiciGelindo TrombiniAugusto ZaccaniThese four men volunteered to stay behind with their commander to try and halt the enemy column dying in the process.
