The church of Santa Apollonia is closed from 1975. In the last years, the urban administration stated that its interior is inaccessible and needs to be carefully restored. After the preservation and consolidation works will be completed, the structure will become an exhibition space of the Archaeological National Museum located close by.Originally, in 1612, an oratory of the Third Order of San Francesco has been built. Thanks to the conspicuous inheritance of a certain Angela Mondini (1951), the friars began the construction of the church. The first brick of the church has been set in 1662 (17th of September) by the friars of San Francesco. In 1691 the architectural project has been modified by Francesco Mazzarrelli, who planned and erected an octagonal structure with seven altars and an entrance facing the main street of the city (from an architectural point of view this constructions was a really novelty for Ferrara). The church has been consecrated to Santa Apollonia in 1664, while its facade has been completed in 1862 according to the plan drawn by the architect Antonio Tosi Foschini. The marble portal comes from the church of the Holy Spirit which was located in Square of the Fighters (this church has been turned into a residential dwelling in 1839 by the lawyer Fulgenzio Folegatti, who decided to save the portal and gave it for free to ornate the Santa Apollonia church). The craftsman who mounted the marble portal in 1862 was Giovanni Beretta. In 1868 the facade was fully completed. From 1796, the convent became barracks for the French troops and was later adapted to a rental house. Reduced in poor condition, it was partially demolished in 1826 and its land transformed into a vegetable garden. In 1909 the nuns of San Vito were moved here till 1916, when they moved to the church of Santa Giustina.Worth mentioning are the wooden choir (it needs to be restored) and a bellows organ (now dismantled and preserved inside the Museum).
