Campo San Felice

Campo San Felice is located on the route that connects the railway station with the Rialto Bridge, at the beginning of the great road built in the second half of the nineteenth century, the Strada Nova. This small square is almost always lively, no wonder because it is a crossroads. Fondamenta S. Felice leads to a quiet part of Venice where many apartments and the beautiful historic Misericordia building are located. And contrary, the street Calle del Traghetto we reach the coast Grand Canal. Across the bridge you immediately enter the shopping district with interesting shops. In the square is the extremely charming Saint Felix Church. It was founded in the 10th century, although the first document mentioning it dates to 1117. It was reconsecrated in 1267 by the patriarch of Caorle and Jesolo. Starting from 1531, it was completely rebuilt in the style of the famous architect Mauro Codussi. The church has a square plan with two façades ( the main façade faces the Rio de San Felice and the other façade faces the Campo San Felice ), the main one featuring pilasters with Corinthian capitals. The interior is on the Greek cross plan, with four pillars at the crossing supporting the arcades of the dome. Artworks include a St. Demetrius attributed to the early Tintoretto (c. 1547) and a crucifix attributed to Andrea Brustolon. An inscription in the interior recalls the baptism of Carlo Rezzonico, future Pope Clement XIII, occurred here on 29 March 1693.
