Carcere Mamertino

A very interesting and humbling experience if you are of the Christian faith, as this is the prison which Paul (and allegedly Peter) were held while awaiting their execution. It is also where Paul wrote 2 Timothy so it is a very important location of our faith. We arrived in the morning half an hour after opening and there was no line. It is very small so you don’t need much time at all to cover it (30 mins is more than enough time). Only thing is I wish there were more English commentary or guides around which tell us the significance of each room etc.

Sicuramente un posto importante per quello che rappresenta, ma il prezzo del biglietto non fa onore alla nostra bella e sempre accogliente nazione. Molti turisti stranieri, oltre a me, hanno giudicato in modo negativo il modo in cui sono stati raggirati. Tre stanzette e un piccolissìmo museo tutto visitabile in 3 minuti valgono al massimo 3 euro.

Very small museum. It was part of my Omnia card so it was worth the visit, but maybe I would not pay to get inside. The jail part was 2 small rooms on top of each other with nothing in them, but it was interesting to see them. If you want to spend more then 5 minutes in, read all the infoboards in main floor.

Before I say anything else, I don't want to take away from the significance of this place, and how amazing it was to physically see where both Paul and Peter were imprisoned at one point. That is truly an invaluable experience.Anyway, it costs 10€ to enter. We did an option with a multimedia guide where they give you a tablet. There was one section that it was beneficial, but the rest it didn't really add much value. The top floor which is really like a museum, did not have much in terms of artifacts or information, but it was a nice introduction to start to grasp what the building was. We walking down to the prison area... There is only a small catwalk that you can stand on. I wish there was seating/more room so that you could meditate/pray down there. We spent a little bit of time down there without disruption which was nice, but I think that was out of luck that the museum wasn't crazy busy.In conclusion, I would say worth the trip if you want to see/feel a meaningful place for the Christian faith.

AL PIANO STRADA DICIAMO CI SONO ALCUNI REPERTI RITROVATI NEL TEMPO MA NEANCHE ECCESSIVAMENTE TANTI POI QUANDO SI SCENDE CERTO FA' EFFETTO PERCHE' SI COMINCIA A PENSARE A CHI C'E' STATO E LA CATTIVERIA DI QUEL TEMPO DOVE AVEVANO SOLO UN PICCOLO BAGLIORE DI LUCE IN UNO SPAZIO STRETTISSIMO! A very interesting stop in the entire Forum and Colosseum complex. The museum and the site are nice but small. The entire tour is probably worth 20 minutes of time. If you get it in a ticket bundle with the Forum and Colosseum, it is great but if not it is probably not needed unless you are a big prison enthusiasts.

Mamertine prison was included in our ticket for Colosseum. It was not that very interesting, very small and without a lot of context, but I was very happy to visit Colosseum, Forum Romanum and Palestine Hill (and skipping the waiting line). So all in all, good visit.

This is a place of pilgrimage rather than a place of tourism. Don’t expect a great structure and the tablet given at the entrance has some flaws, but for people of Christian faith it’s an amazing opportunity of pilgrimage to a very important and historical place.

Sette secoli prima e sette secoli dopo quello che fu poi l'era in cui parrebbe esserci stato l'evento più significativo ovvero la prigionia dei futuri santi Pietro e Paolo. L'iconografia di molti reperti sembra confermare quello che alcuni riportano come una leggenda di origine medievale, quando cioè il carcer Tullianum (fondato da anco Marzio nel VIi secolo AC per la detenzione dei nemici di Roma) venne trasformato in carcere mamertino per poi diventare un insieme di cappelle di natura religiosa. In realtà la struttura si compone di due ambienti, il Tullianum inferiore (dove vedrete la cella angusta con la colonna del supplizio dei santi) e il carcer superiore, con la volta a botte e le pareti dipinte. Nella scala di collegamento una piccola grata protegge il lembo di roccia dove si narra sia rimasta l'impronta della testa sbattuta scendendo da San Pietro. Il sito è molto piccolo e probabilmente resterete un po' delusi rispetto alla esiguità di ciò che vedrete. Il percorso di visita ha inizio con una parte museale dove sono esposti pochi e insignificanti reperti (curiosi i due scheletri ritrovati in una sepoltura) ma interessanti ricostruzioni con plastici 3d del complesso archeologico. Si scende a piccoli gruppi essendo gli spazi angusti. Prezzo non proprio conveniente, si paga più il significato simbolico che non la significatività storica del tutto. Non entusiasma ma alla fine si può fare.... magari visitando la meravigliosa chiesa che sovrasta la struttura. While I give this 5 stars, I can't say I loved it. This is where the Apostles Paul and Peter were imprisoned before they were executed. For Christians, it is a place with deep meaning. Too important to miss.
